Lianhuashan Park莲花山公园
Inside Lianhuashan Park
Futian's central hill park: kite lawns, a lake and the best free view of the CBD
Lianhuashan Park sits at the northern end of Futian's central axis, directly behind the Civic Centre. It covers 181 hectares and takes its name, Lotus Hill, from the seven low peaks that ring it like petals. It opened in June 1997 and the city parks bureau reckons on roughly ten million visits a year, which tells you how central it is to everyday Shenzhen life.
The main peak is only about 100 metres high, so the climb to the summit plaza takes around 20 minutes on foot. Up top is the bronze statue of Deng Xiaoping and a wide terrace looking straight down the axis to Ping An Finance Centre and the Civic Centre roof. Below, the park opens out into lawns, palm groves, a lake and patches of woodland on the western and north-eastern slopes.
It works for almost anyone: an early run before work, a picnic or kite afternoon at the weekend, a slow evening walk up the hill to watch the Futian light show. In November it becomes the main venue of the city's bougainvillea flower show, and the lawns host the Lianhuashan lawn music festival, with free tickets that have to be claimed in advance.
What to see and do
Summit plaza and Deng Xiaoping statue
A 4,000 m² plaza on the 100 m main peak with the bronze Deng statue and the classic view south over Futian's skyline. The parks bureau lists this spot among the city's 'Eight Views'.
Kite Square
A 20,000 m² lawn in the south-east of the park where locals fly kites most weekends; it has become one of the park's signature sights.
Lianhua Lake
A 50,000 m² lake on the south side with lakeside seating. The bald cypresses around it turn rust-red around January, with a wooden boardwalk running through them.
Coconut grove and Yuxiu Garden
The southern palm-and-lawn area hosts the annual bougainvillea show; Yuxiu Garden is the park's dedicated bougainvillea garden, so there is colour even after the show ends.
Shenzhen SEZ 30th Anniversary Memorial Garden
Built in 2010 on the east side, next to two landscaped zones of rainforest-style valley planting.
