Free national art museum for Lingnan ink painting, at the foot of Lianhuashan

Guan Shanyue Art Museum opened in June 1997 to hold the work of Guan Shanyue (1912-2000), one of the leading painters of the Lingnan School, the Guangdong movement that brought Western light and colour into Chinese ink painting. Guan, who studied under the school's founder Gao Jianfu, gave the museum over 800 of his own paintings, sketches and calligraphy, and they remain the core of its collection.

The building sits on Hongli Road with Lianhuashan rising behind it; its semicircular front is meant to evoke the 'mountain and moon' of Guan's name. Inside are three floors and eight exhibition halls, and the museum also keeps a reference library. Beyond Guan's own work it shows 20th-century Chinese painting, design and touring exhibitions.

It is free, cool and rarely crowded, which makes it a good stop before or after a climb up Lianhuashan or a visit to the Children's Palace next door. Shows change every few months, so it rewards return visits.
