Longgang in a minute

Longgang is the huge eastern district, stretching from Buji just beyond Luohu out to the Universiade area and Longcheng. It was Hakka country long before Shenzhen existed, and its walled villages and old market streets are still there, now hemmed in by towers, tech campuses and universities.

Most expats come out for one of three things: a stadium or arena concert at the Universiade Center, an afternoon among the copy-painters of Dafen Oil Painting Village, or work. Bantian, on the district's western edge, is home to Huawei's headquarters and a busy cluster of office parks.

It's further out than Futian or Nanshan, but the metro makes it easy. Line 3 runs the length of the district, and the newer Line 14 is a fast, few-stop line from Futian to the Universiade hub.

Getting around Longgang

Metro

Line 3 runs the length of the district from Futian through Buji, Dafen and the Universiade area to Shuanglong. Line 14 (opened 2022) is the quick ride: a driverless line with few stops from Gangxia North in Futian to the Universiade hub and on to Pingshan. Line 10 serves Bantian and Gankeng, and Line 16 heads east from the Universiade hub.

Concert nights

The stadium is at Universiade station (Lines 3 and 14) and the gymnasium at Universiade Center (Line 16). After a big show, expect long queues at the gates and the metro. Walking a stop or two before getting on often saves time.

Trains

Shenzhen East railway station at Buji runs conventional and long-distance services. For high-speed trains, use Shenzhen North or Futian.

Eat & drink in Longgang

Longgang Old Market snacks

Stalls around the old banyan sell Hakka glutinous rice cakes, dumplings and zongzi for much less than you'd pay in the city centre, with a few dessert shops nearby.

Hakka classics

This is Hakka country, so look for salt-baked chicken, stuffed tofu and pork belly with preserved mustard greens in local restaurants, especially around Longcheng and the old villages.

Before a Universiade show

Eat in Longcheng before the doors open rather than after. Once a stadium crowd spills out, nearby restaurants and the metro fill up together.
