The styles

Salsa, bachata, kizomba, zouk: which is which

Most socials play two or three styles. Colours stay the same all the way down this page.

Salsa萨尔萨

On1 (LA) · On2 (NY) · Cuban

Fast, spinny and playful. Danced in a slot; On1 breaks on the first beat, On2 on the second.

150–220 bpm

First night: Wednesday Latin night at Revolucion Cocktail, Futian

Bachata巴恰塔

Sensual · Dominican · Moderna

Four steps and a tap. Closer and slower than salsa — the easiest style to enjoy in week one.

110–150 bpm

First night: The free beginners' bachata lesson at Revolucion on Wednesdays

Kizomba基宗巴

Traditional · Urbankiz

Angolan, slow and grounded, danced in a soft close embrace. All about walking to the music.

80–100 bpm

First night: Latin Passion's Saturday party goes kizomba after 9:30pm (ask the school first)

Brazilian zouk巴西祖克

Traditional · Neo-zouk

Flowing, with the famous head movements. Danced to R&B and pop remixes as much as zouk.

70–100 bpm

No regular night we know of. Know one? Tell us

Cha-cha恰恰

Cuban cha-cha-chá

Salsa's older cousin: “one, two, cha-cha-cha”. Played between salsa sets at most socials.

110–130 bpm

First night: Mixed into the salsa sets at Revolucion on Wednesdays

Survival guide

Your first social

How a typical Latin social runs, and the unwritten rules everyone else already knows.

  1. 8:45pmArrive, pay at the door, change shoes
  2. 9:00Mini-class — you rotate partners, no partner needed
  3. 10:00Social opens. Early songs are easy and the floor is kind
  4. 11:30Peak floor. Watch from the edge if it's too fast
  5. 1:00amLast bachatas — the regulars' favourite hour
  1. Asking

Anyone can ask anyone — leaders, followers, beginners, teachers. Offer a hand and say “Shall we?” or “一起跳吗?”. A smile and a nod works across every language.

  2. Declining

“No thanks, I'm resting” is enough — no reason needed. If you're turned down, smile and ask someone else; don't re-ask for the next song.

  3. One song

A dance is usually one song, sometimes two. Say thank you, walk your partner back towards the edge, and move on. Nobody expects a whole night.

  4. Shoes

Suede or smooth leather soles that turn. Rubber trainers grip wooden floors and hurt knees. Flats are fine for your first month; bring them in a bag.

  5. Hygiene

Shenzhen humidity is real: deodorant, a spare shirt (regulars bring two), mints, a small towel. Skip heavy perfume in close-embrace styles.

  6. Floor craft

Salsa is danced in a slot, bachata and kizomba travel less. Keep figures small when it's busy, no dips or tricks with beginners, and never teach on the social floor.

Questions

Latin dance in Shenzhen: FAQ

Where can I dance salsa in Shenzhen?

The weekly night we've confirmed is Mi Casa Es Su Casa at Revolucion Cocktail (Link CentralWalk, Futian) on Wednesdays: free entry from 7:30pm, salsa and bachata with cha-cha, merengue and reggaeton mixed in. Latin Passion Dance Academy teaches salsa at its studios in Chegongmiao and Shekou.

Where can I dance bachata in Shenzhen?

Wednesdays at Revolucion, which starts with a free bachata lesson for complete beginners. Latin Passion Dance Academy teaches bachata and has run a Friday social in Shekou and a Saturday party in Chegongmiao, but the latest posts we found are from 2025, so message the school before you go.

Do I need a partner for Latin dance classes in Shenzhen?

No. Beginner lessons rotate partners, so come alone — the free Wednesday bachata lesson at Revolucion is aimed at people with no partner and no experience.

How much does Latin dance cost in Shenzhen?

Revolucion's Wednesday night is free entry. Latin Passion's socials were listed at ¥68–88 at the door (¥35 for members) in 2025. Shenzhen Bachata Festival passes are €130 (full) or €90 (parties only).

Are Latin dance classes in Shenzhen taught in English?

The scene is a mix of Chinese and international dancers, and a beginner lesson needs few words. Ask Latin Passion about the class language before you sign up — they answer on WeChat and Instagram.

What should I wear to a salsa or bachata social?

Something you can move and sweat in, and shoes with smooth soles that turn. Bring a spare shirt — Shenzhen is humid most of the year.

Is there a Latin dance festival in Shenzhen?

Shenzhen Bachata Festival (SZBF) 2027: 22–25 Jan 2027 at Revolucion Cocktail, Futian. Full pass €130 · party pass €90 · J&J €15.
