Old Shenzhen at the Hong Kong border: markets, gold, tailors and street food

Luohu in a minute

Luohu is where modern Shenzhen began. The first towers went up here in the 1980s around the Luohu border crossing and the railway station, and for years this was the city centre. Today it's older, denser and cheaper than Futian next door, and much more fun to walk around.

It's the district of the Luohu crossing to Hong Kong, the Dongmen snack lanes, the Shuibei jewellery markets, the tailors of Luohu Commercial City and the original MixC mall under the Diwang and KK100 towers. Wutong Mountain, Shenzhen's highest peak, rises behind it all.

Expats come to cross the border, shop, eat, get a suit made, or hike. Most live elsewhere, but Luohu is the part of Shenzhen that still feels like a city that grew up rather than one that was planned.
