Pickleball rules in 60 seconds

Enough to survive your first game. The rest you'll pick up on court.

13.4 × 6.1 m — a badminton-sized court with a 2.1 m 'kitchen'
  1. Serve underhand, diagonally. Hit below the waist, cross-court, landing past the kitchen line. One serve attempt only.
  2. Two-bounce rule. The return of serve and the next shot must both bounce before being hit. After that, you can volley.
  3. Stay out of the kitchen. No volleys while standing in the 2.1 m non-volley zone by the net. You can go in to hit a ball that has bounced.
  4. Only the serving side scores. Games go to 11, win by 2. In doubles each player serves before the serve passes over.
  5. Call the score. Server calls three numbers: their score, the opponent's score, and server 1 or 2. Everyone gets it wrong at first.

Gear basics

  • Paddle

Solid paddles, no strings. A mid-weight paddle is the easy first buy; borrow a few before choosing.

  • Balls

Indoor balls are softer with bigger holes; outdoor balls are harder with more, smaller holes. Most central venues are indoor.

  • Shop, then play

Picklehead's courts are upstairs in Decathlon Shahe, so you can buy a paddle and play on the same trip.

  • Or order online

Taobao and JD sell balls, grips and strings. Rackets are worth trying in person first.
