What to bring (and the rules)

Phones, film, tripods, drones — and how to photograph people politely.

Phone is fine

  • Every route here works on a phone.
  • Turn on night mode after sunset and brace on a wall.
  • Bring a power bank: shooting + maps + WeChat drains batteries.

Film

  • Ask the lab for turnaround and price before you drop off; many send scans over WeChat.
  • Ask for a hand check at airport security for ISO 800 and faster film.

Tripods & drones

  • Tripods are fine in parks and on footbridges, not in malls or busy lanes.
  • Drones: most of central Shenzhen is a no-fly zone (Hong Kong border, airport). Leave it at home.
  • Metro security scans bags — allow an extra minute.

Photographing people

  • Street photography in public is normal; ask before close-up portraits.
  • Stallholders often say yes if you ask — 可以拍吗? (kěyǐ pāi ma?).
  • Don't shoot police, border posts or military sites.

Photowalks in Shenzhen: FAQ

When is golden hour in Shenzhen?

In early Oct the sun sets in Shenzhen at about 6:04pm, so golden hour runs roughly 5:34pm–6:17pm and blue hour 6:17pm–6:35pm (approx.). Across the year sunset moves from about 5:39pm in late November to about 7:11pm in late June.

Is there a photowalk group in Shenzhen for foreigners?

We couldn't find an active, public, English-friendly one: we checked Meetup, Luma, Eventbrite, Douban, Huodongxing, Instagram and the photowalk directories. Groups do exist in WeChat and Xiaohongshu. Worldwide Photo Walk is on Saturday 3 October 2026 — anyone can lead one — or take one of the self-guided routes on this page. Know a group? Tell us at szmeetups.com/submit.

Where can I see photography exhibitions in Shenzhen?

Fotografiska Shenzhen, the Swedish photography museum, opened on Thu 1 Oct on the top floor of Shenzhen Bay MixC (Houhai station, exit K1): open daily until 11pm, with a day pass to all its shows from ¥48. Photography shows on or opening soon: Prix Pictet (Fotografiska Shenzhen, On now · until 29 Nov); Michael Najjar (Fotografiska Shenzhen, On now · until 17 Jan); TOILETPAPER (Fotografiska Shenzhen, On now · until 14 Mar); Shi Guowei (Fotografiska Shenzhen, On now · until 14 Mar); Transcendent Realities (Fotografiska Shenzhen, On now · until 30 Sep).

Do I need a real camera?

No. Every route here works on a phone: the alleys suit a phone's wide lens, and night mode handles Huaqiangbei's neon if you brace against a railing.

Can I fly a drone in Shenzhen?

Mostly no. The Hong Kong border, the airport approach and the city centre are restricted airspace, and flights need real-name registration. Leave the drone at home.

What if it rains?

Light rain is good news for the neon route — wet tiles turn into mirrors. Stay in if a typhoon or an orange or red rainstorm warning is up.
