Squash rules in 60 seconds

Enough to survive your first game. The rest you'll pick up on court.

9.75 × 6.4 m, four walls, the ball stays in
  1. Hit the front wall. Every shot must reach the front wall above the tin (the low strip) and below the out line, before bouncing twice.
  2. Take turns. Players alternate hitting the ball. It can hit any side or back wall on the way to the front.
  3. Serve from a box. One foot in the service box, hit above the service line, landing in the opposite back quarter.
  4. Clear the ball. Get out of your opponent's way after your shot. If you block them, it's a 'let' (replay) or a 'stroke' (their point).
  5. Point-a-rally to 11. Every rally scores. Games to 11, win by 2, best of five.

Gear basics

  • Shoes

Non-marking indoor court shoes. Most courts won't let you on in black soles.

  • Eyewear

Protective goggles are cheap and recommended for everyone — a squash ball fits an eye socket.

  • Balls

Double-yellow-dot balls are the standard but need a lot of heat to bounce; beginners often use a faster single-dot ball.

  • Or order online

Taobao and JD sell balls, grips and strings. Rackets are worth trying in person first.
