13 km of seafront path facing Hong Kong, for running, cycling, birds and sunsets
Shenzhen Bay Park is the long green strip on Nanshan and Futian's southern shore, running about 13 km from the Futian mangrove reserve in the east to Wanghai Road and the Shenzhen Bay Bridge in the west. It covers roughly 129 hectares and joins Talent Park and the Dasha River corridor, so you can walk or ride a very long way without leaving parkland.
It was built in two stages: the Mangrove Coastal Ecological Park, on land reclaimed for Binhai Avenue (the road was moved about 200 m north to save the mangroves), opened in 2000, and the seafront leisure belt followed in 2011. Hong Kong's New Territories sit across the water, and in winter the mudflats fill with egrets, gulls and ducks.
This is where much of Shenzhen comes to run, cycle, fly kites and watch the sun go down. Fourteen themed zones are strung along a continuous walking and cycling path, with cafés, playgrounds and a glass-walled book bar on the way. It is free, open late and reachable by several metro lines.
What to see and do
Egret Slope Book Bar (白鹭坡书吧)
A 140 m² glass-walled reading room on the shore with around 8,000 books, coffee and an outdoor terrace, open 10:00–20:00. Nearest metro is Hongshuwan South (Lines 9/11).
Mangrove Coastal Ecological Park
The eastern end, next to the Futian mangrove reserve, and the best stretch for watching waterbirds on the mudflats.
Universiade Torch Tower
The torch tower from the 2011 Universiade stands on the seafront and is the far terminus of the park's sightseeing bus.
Sunrise Theatre and the western piers
Further west are the Sunrise Theatre, the tidal wetland and a sea-viewing pier, with the Shenzhen Bay Bridge to Hong Kong in view.
Fourteen themed zones
From east to west these include Zhongwan Yuehai Plaza, Haiyun Garden, Egret Slope, Beiwan Egret Harbour, Xiaoshashan and the Haifeng sports plaza, all linked by one continuous path.
