The new Shenzhen Science and Technology Museum in Guangming is one of the city's best attractions for anyone who wants to see more than electronics markets and corporate showrooms. Across five floors, it turns computing, communications, robotics, autonomous transport, advanced manufacturing and space science into hands-on exhibits.
It is also huge, popular and easy to visit badly. Tickets sell online, interactive experiences develop queues and “Shenzhen Science Museum” can send map users to a different venue in Futian. Here is how to book the right museum and use your time well.
Make Sure You Choose the Guangming Museum
Search maps for 深圳科学技术馆, beside Guangming Station in Guangming District. It opened on 1 May 2025 in Guangming Science City.
Do not confuse it with 深圳科学馆, the older Shenzhen Science Museum near Science Museum Station in Futian. For the vast new building with 950 interactive exhibits, you want Guangming.
Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, the museum covers roughly 128,300 square metres. Its curved metallic exterior is worth seeing before you enter.
Opening Hours
According to Guangming District's August 2026 update, normal hours are:
- Tuesday–Friday: 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
- Weekends and public holidays: 9:30 a.m.–6:00 p.m.
- Monday: closed, except when a public holiday changes the schedule
Last admission can be earlier. The museum also closes briefly for maintenance—the latest short closure was in September 2026—so check the official account before travelling.
How to Book Tickets
Use the official 深圳科学技术馆 WeChat mini program. Entry is real-name and online; public guidance says there is no walk-in ticket window for the exhibition halls.
Enter each visitor's identity details exactly and bring the original passport or ID used in the booking. Children and other visitors eligible for free admission may still need a zero-price reservation.
Ticket-release timing has changed since opening. Open the mini program a few days before your preferred date and use its current rule rather than an old blog screenshot. The permanent galleries, special-effects cinemas, temporary programmes and educational courses can be separate products. Read exactly what each ticket admits.
If tickets are sold out, check for cancellations. The public lobby may be accessible without a gallery ticket, but that is not a substitute for the museum's main exhibits. Avoid unofficial sellers because reservations are tied to identity documents.
Getting There
Take Metro Line 6 to Guangming Station (光明站). Current visitor information points to exits C or D, followed by a short signed walk.
Line 6 connects with Shenzhen North Railway Station, which makes the museum convenient for high-speed rail arrivals. From Futian or Nanshan, allow generous travel time: Guangming is in northern Shenzhen and this is not a quick downtown stop.
What to See on Each Floor
Second Floor: Hello, World!
“Hello, World!” introduces computing, communications and the structure of the digital world. It sets up the museum's story, but families should avoid spending their whole first hour reading every panel before reaching the more physical exhibits upstairs.
Third Floor: Technology in Daily Life
This floor covers communications history, fibre optics, BeiDou satellite messaging, undersea cables, construction, low-altitude transport, drones and autonomous driving. It is particularly relevant to a Shenzhen technology trip because the exhibits connect directly to infrastructure visible around the city.
Simulators and live sessions can form queues. Note their times when you arrive, then explore nearby exhibits between sessions.
Fourth Floor: Smart Industry
The fourth floor moves into logistics, medical technology and industrial production—the systems behind Shenzhen's factories and supply chains. Visitor reports frequently highlight robot-dog, exoskeleton and technology-stage demonstrations, although schedules change.
Prioritize staffed or physical experiences. You do not need to stop at every touchscreen to understand the floor.
Fifth Floor: Space and the Universe
The darker upper galleries cover astronomy, spacecraft and frontier science. Their immersive atmosphere makes a natural finale and one of the museum's strongest photography areas.
If space is your priority, go here early and work down. Otherwise the normal second-to-fifth-floor route moves neatly from digital foundations to life, industry and the universe.
How Long Do You Need?
Three hours is enough for highlights. Pass efficiently through “Hello, World!”, focus on the interactive exhibits on floors three and four, then finish with the space floor. Choose no more than two scheduled demonstrations.
Allow five or six hours for a relaxed visit. Follow all four floors, take a proper break and add one cinema or educational programme only if the timing fits. The museum is too large for a one-hour dash.
In its first 100 days it received more than 1.6 million visitors, with peak summer attendance above 25,000 a day. Arriving near opening time is the easiest way to improve the experience.
Is It Only for Children?
No. Families are the core audience, but adults interested in technology, architecture and Shenzhen's industrial development will find plenty to see. The communication, autonomous-transport, robotics and manufacturing sections are especially relevant.
Expect a public science centre, not a corporate trade show. The emphasis is on understandable explanations, interaction and spectacle rather than product specifications.
Food and Breaks
Visitor posts mention a robot coffee station and an AI-themed restaurant. Treat them as fun details rather than guaranteed attractions; operators and hours can change.
The building is large enough that a seated break improves the second half of the visit. Eat before the busiest lunch period, and check current rules before bringing food into exhibition areas.
Practical Tips
- Reserve every visitor through the official mini program.
- Bring the original identity document used for booking.
- Save the confirmation while you have a strong data connection.
- Arrive close to opening time.
- Check demonstration times immediately after entry.
- Wear comfortable shoes.
- Verify cinema and course admission separately.
- Check closure notices the night before.
Add It to a Shenzhen Tech Trip
The museum fills most of a day. Put Huaqiangbei on another day rather than racing across Shenzhen.
For technology working in public, add a robotaxi ride or drone food delivery at Talent Park. Travelers with only one free day can use our one-day Shenzhen technology tour.
