Lo Ta-yu 罗大佑罗大佑
Taipei, Taiwan · Mandopop, Folk rock, Singer-songwriter
Lo Ta-yu is the godfather of Chinese singer-songwriters. A trained doctor who chose music instead, he released his debut album Pedantry (之乎者也) in 1982 and changed Mandopop with songs that mixed rock, folk and reggae with sharp social commentary; some were suppressed for a time in both Taiwan and mainland China. 'Childhood' (童年), 'Love Song 1990' (恋曲1990) and 'Pearl of the Orient' (东方之珠) are standards several generations can sing, and he wrote the 1985 charity anthem 'Tomorrow Will Be Better'. The Spring Dragon Symphony Night sets his songs with a symphony orchestra, seated, at the Longgang International Art Center: a rare chance to hear a living legend of Chinese pop in a concert hall.
Sounds like Bob Dylan
