How to book a public court

Each district runs its own public courts and books them through its own service, in Chinese. Here's how it works.

  1. Find your district's service. Each district books its public venues through its own WeChat service; the city's i深圳 app covers some courts too. The table below shows which one each centre uses.
  2. Register with your real name. All of them ask for real-name registration (实名认证). Check that yours accepts your passport before you count on a court — if not, a Chinese-speaking friend can book for you.
  3. Look for public-benefit slots. Some districts release free or discounted public-benefit (公益) slots. Nanshan offered free weekday slots at Lixiang Park in 2023 — check the service for the current scheme.
  4. Or book the venue directly. Some centres also sell slots through their own WeChat account, like Huangmugang (福田体育SPORTS) and Shenzhen Bay Sports Center (春茧未来荟).

  1. Beginner

    NTRP rating: 1.5 – 2.5

    You can…

    • Rally slowly from the baseline

Tennis rules in 60 seconds

Enough to survive your first game. The rest you'll pick up on court.

23.8 × 11 m (doubles), mostly hard courts
  1. Serve diagonally. Two attempts to land the serve in the opposite service box. Miss both — double fault, point lost.
  2. One bounce max. Return the ball before it bounces twice. Volleys (no bounce) are fine anywhere except on the serve return.
  3. Lines are in. A ball touching any part of the line is in. Call your own side, honestly and loudly.
  4. Love to game. 0, 15, 30, 40, game. At 40–40 (deuce) you need two points in a row.
  5. Six games a set. First to six games, two clear. At 6–6 play a tiebreak to 7.

Gear basics

  • Balls

Pressureless balls last far longer in humid weather; pressurised balls feel livelier but go flat within weeks.

  • Strings

To get a racket restrung, ask a racket shop for 穿线 (chuān xiàn).

  • Heat

Summer courts get very hot: bring more water than you think, and play early, late or under a roof.

  • Or order online

Taobao and JD sell balls, grips and strings. Rackets are worth trying in person first.

Tennis in Shenzhen: FAQ

Where can I play tennis in Shenzhen?

Public tennis centres include Shenzhen Bay Sports Center, Lixiang Park (Nanshan Tennis Center) and Shekou Sports Center in Nanshan; Huangmugang, Jingtian and Xiangmi Sports Center in Futian; and Luohu Tennis Center. The Futian Shangri-La also has two terrace courts.

How do I book public tennis courts in Shenzhen?

Through the district services: 南山文体通 (Nanshan), 幸福福田 (Futian), 罗湖文体通 (Luohu), 宝安文体通 (Bao'an) or the city's i深圳 app. All need Chinese real-name registration, which is the main hurdle for newcomers. Some centres also book through their own WeChat account.

How much does a tennis court cost in Shenzhen?

Public venues rarely publish their hourly prices, so check in the booking service. Some districts also release free or discounted public-benefit slots.

Is there social tennis in English?

Not regularly, as far as we know. Club Hive International ran a one-off Tennis Night in August 2026, and the Shenzhen Women's International Club lists tennis as a member activity. If you run a group, tell us.

Where can I play tennis when it rains?

Huangmugang Tennis Center in Futian has six courts under a membrane roof, and Lixiang Park and Shenzhen Bay Sports Center have indoor courts.

Can I watch pro tennis in Shenzhen?

Yes. The Billie Jean King Cup Finals are at Shenzhen Bay Sports Center each September through 2027, and ITF men's and women's events run in Guangming in October 2026.
