Wutong Mountain梧桐山

0 upcomingLuohu

Shenzhen's highest peak at 943.7 m, with six marked trails from Luohu and Yantian

Wutong Mountain is the forested ridge on the eastern edge of central Shenzhen, straddling Luohu, Yantian and Longgang. It has been a national scenic area since 2009 and covers 42 km². Its summit, Big Wutong (大梧桐), is the highest point in the city at 943.7 m. From the top you look down over Shenzhen on one side and across to Hong Kong's hills and Mirs Bay on the other.

The ridge has three main peaks: Little Wutong (692 m, topped by the Shenzhen TV tower), Doufutou and Big Wutong. Forest covers nearly 90% of the area, so the city calls it Shenzhen's lungs. Wild boar, leopard cats and macaques live here, and in March and April the slopes are covered in pink and white azaleas.

This is the city's standard serious hike. Six official trails go up from different sides, from a gentle paved road to a staircase with a 70-degree pitch. Expect to spend half a day or more, and expect company on fine weekends and holidays.

What to see and do

Big Wutong summit

The 943.7 m top of Shenzhen, marked with a large 'Pengcheng First Peak' boulder and a man-made 'heavenly pool'. It is reached by the steep 1.1 km Haohan Slope (好汉坡) from the mid-mountain plaza.

Taishan Stream (泰山涧)

The oldest and most popular trail, about 5.5 km from the north gate following a shaded stream with pools and small cascades. It is the coolest way up in summer.

Lingyun Trail (凌云道)

The steepest route: 2.1 km of near-vertical stone steps from the Xiantong Sports Park side up to Little Wutong, with pavilions looking toward Hong Kong.

Azalea Valley and spring flowers

North of Little Wutong Plaza, Azalea Valley holds the largest wild stands of Rhododendron moulmainense in Shenzhen, in bloom around March. The 2026 azalea festival ran 20–31 March and was free.

Wutong Pavilion (梧桐阁)

A visitor centre beside the TV tower at 694 m with a 360-degree viewing deck, nature exhibits, a book bar and a café. It opened in March 2025, is free with real-name advance booking and closes on Tuesdays.

  • Night hiking is prohibited. The scenic area is open 06:00–19:00 only, so start early enough to be down before closing.
  • Fires, smoking, camping and cooking are all banned on the mountain. Use a rain poncho rather than an umbrella on exposed ridges.
  • Take the metro or a bus rather than driving to the north gate. Wangtong Road is a two-lane bottleneck, the car park has about 300 spaces, and traffic police close it at peak times.
  • Pick your trail by fitness: North Road (about 7.8 km, paved, no bikes or cars) is the easiest; Lingyun is the steepest; Xiutong is the quickest route to Big Wutong; Taishan Stream is the shadiest.
  • The trails link up at the top, so you can go up one side and down another. Check which metro station sits near your descent route before you set off.
