Gong Gong Gong (工工工) are a Beijing duo formed in 2015: Hong Kong-born guitarist Tom Ng, who sings in Cantonese, and Canadian bassist Joshua Frank, who spent much of his childhood in Beijing and doesn't speak Cantonese. Their music is stripped to the bone, just guitar and bass locked into hypnotic, repetitive grooves, and it has made them one of the best-known bands from China's underground abroad. Their debut Phantom Rhythm (幽靈節奏, 2019, Wharf Cat Records) was covered by Pitchfork and led to SXSW and MoMA PS1, and Mongkok Duel, a split with Taiwan's Mong Tong, was pitched as the soundtrack to a lost kung-fu film. At B10 they play 80 minutes: half Phantom Rhythm, half songs from the next album.
