Language Exchange in Shenzhen: the basics

How they work

Most exchanges split the room by language: you spend half the time speaking your native language and half practising the one you're learning. Hosts rotate tables every 20–30 minutes so you meet new people. Name stickers say what you speak and what you want to practise.

What it costs

Usually nothing — the venue earns from drinks, so buying one (¥25–50) is the polite move. A few charge ¥20–50 at the door with a drink included. Teacher-led Chinese corners are sometimes paid classes in disguise; we flag those.

Which one to pick

Beginners: go on a weekend afternoon when it's quieter. Want to make friends fast: the big weeknight ones in Futian and Shekou. Serious about Chinese: pick a teacher-led corner or a small group with a Chinese-majority crowd.

Etiquette

Split time 50/50, don't correct every mistake, and add people on WeChat at the end rather than mid-conversation. Most groups share their WeChat QR on the poster — scan it to hear about changes.

Good to know

Are language exchanges in Shenzhen free?

Most are free or ask you to buy a drink (¥25–50). A few charge a small fee that includes a drink.

I only speak English. Can I still go?

Yes — around half the people at most exchanges want to practise English with you. Look for 'All levels' or 'beginners' table'.

Which night is best?

Tuesday in Futian and Thursday in Shekou are the biggest. Saturday afternoons are quieter and better for beginners.

Do I need to RSVP?

No for most — just turn up. RSVP here anyway to get a reminder and any last-minute changes.
